For every person who is fascinated with band’s name (I was): there is a little bit of Chicano here, but not much of the Batman. However, there’s freedom, which sometimes is actually free. And most importantly, there’s fun.
Musicians’ use slow-jam soul, a little bit of psychedelia, which reminds me of a brave attempts to imitate early Frank Zappa. Yet, if you were looking for saviours of Los Angeles’ latino music, you will be disappointed. Freedom Is Free is an enjoyable album, but it’s not unforgettable. It’s rather an another pleasant background alternative soul record with latino hints.
However, there are some special musical gems that has to be mentioned. La Jura is the most important tune here, and it deserves to be considered as one of Chicano Batman’s signature tracks. The same goes for Jealousy. And maybe Friendship. Or Angel Child. Or The Taker Story. Well, maybe this LP is better than I thought.
Anyway, let’s listen to La Jura again.
